Steel pipe weight calculator
Pipe by NPS and schedule, resolved to OD and wall from ASME B36.10M. 1 foot of 2" Schedule 40 mild steel is 3.65 lb. 10 feet of 4" Schedule 80 is 149 lb. Pick the size and schedule, get the number. No hunting for wall thickness tables.
Weights are calculated from published densities and standard section geometry. Real plate and bar stock runs ±2–3% from spec.
Steel pipe weight per foot (Schedule 40 mild steel)
Dimensions from ASME B36.10M. Weight = π/4 × (OD² − ID²) × length × 0.2836. For Schedule 80, 80S, or XXS use the calculator above and pick a different schedule.
Questions welders ask about this one
What is Schedule 40 steel pipe?
Schedule 40 is the most common steel pipe wall thickness for plumbing, structural, and light industrial use. For NPS 1/2 through 10 it is the same as "STD" (standard weight). Wall thickness varies by NPS size. The chart above has the exact values from ASME B36.10M.
How much does 1 foot of 2 inch Schedule 40 steel pipe weigh?
3.65 lb/ft. Computed from OD 2.375 in, wall 0.154 in, density 0.2836 lb/in³. First-principles math agrees with the published table to within 0.3%.
What is the difference between Schedule 40 and XS (Extra Strong)?
XS is the same as Schedule 80 for NPS 1/2 through 8. It has a thicker wall and higher pressure rating. For NPS above 8 the naming diverges and STD, XS, and XXS no longer line up cleanly with schedule numbers. The calculator stays in the safe range of NPS 1/2 to 8.
