Steel plate weight calculator

Mild steel plate at 0.2836 lb/in³. A 4×8 sheet of 1/4 inch is 326.7 lb. A 4×10 of 3/8 is 612 lb. Plug in your dimensions, hit nothing, get a number. If you are about to quote the material, save the total and move on.

Questions welders ask about this one

How much does a 4 by 8 sheet of 1/4 inch steel weigh?

About 327 pounds. Math: 48 × 96 × 0.25 × 0.2836 = 326.7 lb. Real stock runs 320–335 lb depending on mill tolerance.

What is the density of A36 steel plate?

0.2836 lb/in³ (7.85 g/cm³). A36 is the same density as 1018, 1020, and most other mild carbon steels. Alloy differences do not change the density enough to matter for weight calculations.

Is plate weight different from sheet weight?

No. Plate and sheet use the same density. The distinction is thickness. Anything under about 3/16 inch is typically called sheet, above that is plate. The math is identical: length × width × thickness × 0.2836.
