Aluminum angle weight calculator
Aluminum angle is the light frame and trim stock — brackets, edging, light structure where steel would be overkill. 6061-T6 is 0.0975 lb/in³. A 2×2×1/4 equal-leg angle is 1.10 lb/ft. A 4×4×3/8 is 3.35 lb/ft. Enter the leg size and thickness below.
Quick answer
Calculate 6061 equal-leg aluminum angle weight by leg size and thickness.
Common 6061 aluminum angle weights
Equal-leg angle cross-section = thickness × (2 × leg − thickness). Weight = that area × length × 0.0975. Values use nominal dimensions and match the calculator above. Extruded angle runs ±3% due to fillet radius at the heel.
Questions welders ask about this one
How much does 2×2×1/4 aluminum angle weigh?
About 1.10 lb per foot in 6061. Math: 0.25 × (2 × 2 − 0.25) × 12 × 0.0975 = 1.10 lb/ft. The same angle in mild steel is 3.19 lb/ft.
Why is the angle formula not just two flat bars added together?
Because the two legs overlap at the heel — if you added two full legs you would double-count that corner. The standard area is thickness × (2 × leg − thickness), which subtracts the overlap once. For thin angle the difference is small, but it matters on heavy sections.
Does 6061 angle weigh the same as 6063 angle?
Yes for quoting. 6061-T6 and 6063-T5 are within 0.5% on density and both round to 0.0975 lb/in³. 6063 is the architectural alloy; 6061 is structural. Same weight per foot for the same size.
Weight is only half of material cost. To turn these pounds into a number you can quote, run the weld cost calculator for wire, gas, and labor per inch, or the job pricing calculator to build the whole bid.
